Quote from Billy Wilcosky on March 25, 2025, 11:27 pmI shared Upviber over at Reddit the other day, and most people have been nice and encouraging. One person asked why I decided to create this full website, upviber.com. They wondered why I didn't just create a subreddit.
I responded by providing some reasons. But, beyond the reasons I already gave, there's also the fact that I just wanted to.
And I don't mean that in a snarky or rude way. It's a genuine and perfect answer to that type of question.
What would the internet be if everyone only used Reddit or Meta platforms? It's already leaning that way and I don't want the internet to fully become a place like that. A place with a few large proprietors and everyone creates their groups/clubs within those few places.
I think it's also because I grew up when the internet was getting popular. In the 90s when people I knew used America Online (AOL) and dialup to get online. When you'd check your email and hear, "You've got mail!" It's fascinating that my kids don't know anything about those times. The internet was full of more independent websites and services back then. And/or they were easier to find. I liked that version of the internet. It felt more creative and independent. I'll always push for it to return (although it's highly unlikely).

Quote from Aprilpad on April 30, 2025, 11:40 amYes, I was a part of those days too. When AltaVista, Yahoo, MSN, and Overture were the search kings.
However, turning to the topic, I do believe that you have hit an important point. Life is about alternatives and choice. The power and right to own your corner, no matter where you are or what you do.
Not everyone wants to be on Reddit. I must admit that I dig the forum, but my wife does not. She finds the mods very rude in their administrative style. And many people like her desire some good news for a change. That is where Up Viber comes in.
A unique alternative to rest your mind and soul.
